The Emberbearers

Switch class at any time, even mid-expedition: your level follows you. Each Emberbearer has a silhouette, a resource and four techniques forged in ember.

The Ashbreaker, two-handed axe in hand, in the Glade.

Warrior · Melee · Juggernaut

Ashbreaker

« Steel, sweat and fury. »

Master of two-handed weapons. Every blow landed and every wound taken fuels his Rage, unleashed in devastating whirls. Rage hardens him: up to 20% less damage taken.

Story

A smith turned soldier, the Ashbreaker throws himself into the thick of the fray. Every blow taken stokes his Rage; when it overflows, he whirls his axe and the ground splits beneath his axe. He never retreats: he advances until nothing is left before him.

The Ashbreakers forged the blades of the Hearth. When the Winter came, they took the heaviest and left the forge without letting them cool. The ember rune on their sword still shines from that first day.

Techniques · Rage

  • Ember HewBasic attack

A chain of three axe blows. The third one smashes the ground. Generates Rage.

  • Ash Whirl

Spin with your weapon for 1.2 s, dealing 3 × 32 damage to all nearby enemies. You can move while spinning.

  • Onrush

Charge an enemy between 5 and 24 m away and knock it down: 30 damage and a 1.5 s stun. Generates 25 Rage.

  • Hearthquake

Strike the ground with titanic force: 40 Fire damage in a 6 m radius, knocking enemies back and slowing them by 50% for 4 s.

  • Cleaver

Attempt to finish off an enemy: 90 damage, tripled if the target is below 35% health.

The Hearthwarden, in ivory and bronze with a two-handed sword, in the Citadel.

Paladin · Melee · Hallowed Ember

Hearthwarden

« By the Light, I judge you. »

A holy warrior in golden armour, the paladin strikes with a blessed two-handed sword, consecrates the ground beneath him and rises again through the Light.

Story

The Hearthwarden carries the breath of the Hearth where the Winter snuffed it out. He consecrates the ground, heals his companions and shields the party behind his Unbroken Vigil. His faith is simple: as long as a fire burns, nothing is lost.

The Hearthwardens kept the sacred fire night after night. Each carries into battle a sword quenched in the coals of the Hearth: as long as its blade glows, the Warden does not fall.

Techniques · Mana

  • Tempered StrikeBasic attack

Three blows of a blessed sword; the last one releases a burst of Light around the impact. Restores mana.

  • Coalbed

Consecrate the ground around you for 7 s: enemies in the area (6 m) take 24 holy Fire damage per second.

  • Hearth’s Breath

Call on the Light to restore 35% of your health and push back nearby enemies.

  • Unbroken Vigil

Makes you immune to all damage for 6 s. When it ends, the bubble bursts, dealing 70 Holy damage around you.

The Cindermancer, in ash-grey robes with an orb staff, in the snow of Givrecombe.

Mage · Ranged · Ash, ember & frost

Cindermancer

« Knowledge is the sharpest of blades. »

Frail but formidable, the mage locks enemies in ice before reducing them to ashes with ember orbs.

Story

Since childhood, the Cindermancer has studied the two temperatures of the world. He freezes the enemy ranks, then turns them to ash with an ember orb: he is the one who sparks the Ember × Frost reactions the whole party exploits.

Only the Cindermancers can hold ember and frost in the same hand. They learned the enemy’s cold to turn it against them: freeze first, burn next.

Techniques · Mana

  • Rime DartBasic attack

Launch a bolt of ice: 29 Frost damage, slowing the target by 30% for 2 s.

  • Rime Crown

A wave of freezing cold bursts around you: 30 Frost damage, freezing enemies within 7 m for 3.5 s.

  • Ashflight

Teleport 11 m forward (in your movement direction) and shake off slows.

  • Ember Orb

Hurl a huge fireball: 75 Fire damage to the target and 38 to enemies within 3.5 m of the explosion.

  • Whiteout

Call down a blizzard on the target area for 6 s: 16 Frost damage every 0.5 s and a 50% slow.

The Sootblade, hood-mask and curved daggers, in the Glade.

Rogue · Melee · Assassin

Sootblade

« Nothing personal. »

Quick and elusive, the rogue builds combo points with his daggers, then spends them on searing thrusts. He can vanish in a cloud of smoke.

Story

The Sootblade strikes where no one looks. She builds combo points, vanishes into her smoke, then runs through in one thrust what seemed invincible. Her curved daggers keep a trace of ember on their edge.

The Sootblades come from the chimneys of Valcendre. They slip wherever smoke goes, and their daggers keep the warmth of the hearth on their edge. The dead never hear them coming: they feel them, too late.

Techniques · Energy

  • Twin CutBasic attack

Quick, alternating dagger strikes: 18 damage, generating 1 combo point per hit.

  • Blade Spray

Throw knives all around you: 28 damage to every enemy within 6 m. Generates 1 combo point.

  • Sootstep

Step through the shadows to appear behind the target. Your next attack is a guaranteed critical hit.

  • Searing Thrust

A devastating finishing blow that consumes your combo points: 15 + 18 Fire damage per combo point.

  • Smokescreen

Disappear in a cloud of smoke: stealth for 6 s, +30% speed, enemies lose sight of you. Your first attack deals triple damage.

The Ashstalker with his antler bow, in Givrecombe.

Hunter · Ranged · Archer

Ashstalker

« No prey escapes me. »

A peerless archer, the hunter riddles enemies with arrows, leaps out of reach and rains down deadly volleys.

Story

The Ashstalker keeps the dead at bay. He riddles the ranks with arrows, lays freezing traps, leaps out of reach and rains volleys on those who come close. His antler bow has never missed the same prey twice.

The Ashstalkers know every trail in the valley, even under snow. Their arrows carry ember feathers that do not go out in flight; you see them streak through the night like low stars.

Rain arrows on the target area for 5 s: 18 damage every 0.5 s to enemies in a 7 m radius.

The Blackbrand, in soot robes with a purple glow, in the Citadel.

Warlock · Ranged · Pact & curses

Blackbrand

« Every ember turns to ash. I only hasten it. »

A spellcaster bound by pact to the dead embers of Valcendre, the warlock rots foes with curses, drains their life to feed its own and hurls a Cinder Colossus down upon their ranks.

Story

The Blackbrand gnaws at enemies with curses and drains their life to feed her own. When the Winter presses too hard, she brings a Cinder Colossus of dead ember crashing down on their ranks. Her allies avoid her; her enemies, far more.

The Blackbrands made a pact with the dead embers, those the Hearth cast out. From them they draw a purple glow that gnaws at whatever it touches. People fear them, but against the Winter you do not choose your allies.

Techniques · Mana

  • Black CinderBasic attack

Hurl a bolt of shadow: 31 Shadow damage. Restores a little mana.

An unearthly howl: 20 Shadow damage and terrifies (stuns) enemies within 7 m for 2.5 s.

  • Cinder Colossus

A colossus of dead embers crashes onto the target area: 90 Fire damage and a 2 s stun in a 5 m radius. It then rises and fights at your side for 10 s, charging the nearest enemy and cleaving everything around it (20 Fire damage in a 3 m radius every 1.1 s), before crumbling to ash.

The Cantor of Ashes with his ember censer, in the Glade.

Cantor · Support · Healing & ember spirits

Cantor of Ashes

« As long as a song rises, the ember does not die. »

Keeper of the Hearth-Mother’s hymns, the Cantor swings an ember censer at the end of a chain. He heals and shields his companions, raises the Hearth Song that spurs them on and lifts the fallen from afar. Alone, his ember spirits fight at his side.

Unlocked at the Altar (300 embers)

Story

The Cantor of Ashes carries neither blade nor bow: his ember censer is enough. His song spurs those around him, his Aegis turns aside the blows meant for them and his Rally tears the fallen from Winter’s grip. Alone, he wakes ember spirits that fight in his stead.

When the Hearth-Mother faltered, people sang to her. The Cantors kept those hymns and carry them as they swing their censers, where an ember taken from the hearth smoulders. Where their voice rises, the wounded stand again and will-o’-the-wisps awaken.

Techniques · Fervour

  • Censer SwingBasic attack

Swing the censer in a short arc: 23 damage, 36 Fire damage on the third blow. Heals the most wounded ally for 20% of the damage dealt (half as much on yourself) and restores Fervour.

  • Hearth Song

Raise the Hearth Song for 8 s: allies within 8 m (yourself included) deal 10% more damage and regenerate 1.5% of their health per second.

  • Ash Aegis

Shield the most wounded ally within 25 m (or yourself, at half strength): a barrier absorbs 22% of their maximum health for 8 s.

  • Ember Spirits

Summon 3 will-o’-the-wisps that circle you for 12 s: every 0.9 s, each hurls a bolt dealing 13 Fire damage at the nearest enemies (20 m).

  • Rally

Raise a fallen ally within 30 m from afar, with 40% of their health. Alone, you rise yourself once per act when a blow should fell you.
